Antique Georgian Lovers Eye Mourning Brooch Pearls 18ct Gold
A wonderful antique Georgian Lover’s eye brooch from the early 19th Century featuring a painted eye miniature looking out from beneath a glass window. It’s held safely in a scalloped 18ct gold frame ringed with bright natural pearls.
Eye miniatures, or “Lovers’ Eyes” were a romantic and curious trend during the 18th and 19th Century and were often gifted as love tokens to a secret lover. To keep their relationship hidden from those who would contest it, only the eye of the giver was painted so that their identity remained anonymous to all but the receiver.
The eye was likely painted in remembrance of a deceased loved one and is accompanied by a secret locket at the back containing a lock of plaited brown hair that perhaps belonged to the same person.
It’s a rare and highly collectable antique treasure and was clearly very beloved and has been kept in excellent condition.
