Antique Victorian Pietra Dura Flower Locket 18ct Gold
An exquisite antique Victorian locket featuring a detailed Pietra Dura image in the centre depicting a bouquet of white flowers and green leaves, perfectly inlaid into a black hardstone base. It’s set in a fabulous 18ct gold frame, with scrolling motifs and golden balls at the top and bottom.
Pietra Dura (Hard stone) is a decretive mosaic art form that was first developed in ancient Rome and saw a revival during the Victorian era. The pieces are made up of polished, coloured stones which are skilfully cut and inlaid into a black base, creating a striking and seamless work of art that can easily be mistaken for a painting.
The piece dates to the mid 19th Century (Circa 1860) and has remained in pristine condition. It’s fitted with a large glass window at the back, complete with gold rim, with plenty of space within to store cherished photographs or a lock of hair.
