Antique Victorian Mourning Pearl Diamond Star Locket 15ct Gold

Dating to the late 19th Century, this large antique Victorian mourning star locket is fashioned in a warm 15ct yellow gold that has developed a lovely smoothness and patina over time. At the front, an eight-pointed star decorated with gleaming white seed pearls and a twinkling old mine cut diamond in the centre, with an elaborate “S.H.” monogram engraved on the reverse. 

The locket is complete with its original rims and windows inside and appears to have been made as a loving tribute to a deceased husband or father as it features an old photograph of a sophisticated gentleman with a suave beard and moustache inside, along with a lock of his blonde hair. The initials on the back likely belong to the man as well and though we can’t be sure who he was, it’s clear he was very dear to his family.  

Though it may seem morbid today, mourning jewellery was extremely popular in the 19th Century and worn as a symbol of undying love and remembrance. Pearls and diamonds were often used to represent eternal love and devotion and the star perhaps symbolises the eternal spirit of the deceased, who may be gone but whose light is forever shining, like a star in the night sky.
