Antique Victorian Celestial Guard Chain Necklace 9ct Gold

A sumptuous antique Victorian celestial guard chain made up of 9ct gold cable links in two contrasting styles, with larger faceted links in between, decorated with scrolled engraving and stamped with star motifs. 

Celestial jewellery became increasingly sought after during the 19th Century as people began to look up at the stars and heavens once more with renewed fascination. Stars were a popular lucky charm to be wished upon and said to guide us on the path to our dreams and our true destiny.

The chain measures an impressive 65 inches in length and leads to a claw clasp at the bottom that would have traditionally been adorned with a pocket watch, lorgnette, or muff.  It has a good, weight to it and can be worn as one long chain or looped twice around the neck.
