Antique Victorian Butterfly Brooch Diamond Opal Ruby
Dating to the late 19th Century, this magnificent antique Victorian butterfly brooch is set in silver and backed in 18ct yellow gold. The intricate, open-work wings are set aglow with approx. 0.60ct of twinkling rose cut diamonds and 2.2ct of luminous natural opals, flashing with electric blues and greens, while the body is anchored by a vibrant 0.35ct pink ruby thorax and eyes.
This piece hails from the height of the Victorian "Insect Boom," a romantic era obsessed with the natural world. To the Victorians, the butterfly was more than a pretty motif, it was the symbol of the soul, representing spiritual transformation, hope, and resurrection. It reflects a time when jewellery spoke a hidden language of sentimentality, defying the industrial age with the delicate beauty of nature.
This captivating Victorian butterfly brooch has remained in excellent condition thanks to its large gold safety pin that is securely screwed to the back. It’s an eye-catching conversation starter, perfect for the antique collector or anyone who wants to add a dash of antique charm to a lapel, scarf, or even a hat.
