Antique Victorian Albert Chain Necklace 9ct Gold
A grand antique Victorian Albert chain modelled in 9ct gold which has developed a lovely rosy-gold patina with age. It’s made up of interlocking fetter links, faceted cable links and fancy, open links with pierced motifs and floral engraving down the sides.
Albert chains were named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first World War who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.
It's a wonderful antique Albert chain dating to the late-1800s and is complete with the classic double claw clasps, stamped 9ct gold.
