An exquisite antique Georgian snake pin beautifully preserved from the early 19th Century. The snakes head and tail are fashioned in 18ct gold and crowned with deep red rose cut garnets. The body is made up of a thick band of plaited brown hair that coils elegantly into two tight loops in the centre.

Mourning jewellery was worn in remembrance of a deceased loved one and sometimes included a lock of their hair so that a piece of them was always kept close to the wearer’s heart. The coiled serpent was a popular motif representing eternal love and is further emphasised by the garnets which also symbolise everlasting love.

It’s a rare antique treasure and has remained in pristine condition. It’s complete with a long 18ct pin and an antique box with plum velvet interior and the maker’s insignia under the lid “Goldsmith & Jeweller – Alfred Souter – 76 Nethergate Dundee”.
