Antique Georgian Diamond Enamel Mourning Ring
A remarkable antique Georgian mourning ring from the early 19th Century featuring a large face fitted with a glass window in the centre with the initials “M.R.” displayed as a monogram over plaited blonde hair.
Mourning jewellery was worn in remembrance of a deceased loved one and often contained a lock of their hair so that a piece of them was always kept close to the wearer.
The outer border is decorated with eight twinkling rose cut diamonds and layered in white and sky-blue enamel with an engraved edge and golden stars in between. The white enamel is symbolic of purity and innocence and indicates it may have been made in memorial of a beloved child.
The ring is modelled entirely in 18ct gold and features ornate shoulders fashioned in a foliate style. It was clearly very dear to its original owners and deserves to be treasured once more.
