Antique Victorian Large Multi-Gemstone Harlequin Pendant With Box
Make a bold statement with this magnificent antique Victorian multi-gemstone harlequin pendant, skilfully crafted from 18ct yellow gold. Its fabulous, open-work dropper design is abundantly decorated with an assortment of multi-coloured quartz, zircon, tourmaline, spinel and aquamarine in various cuts and sizes, with scrolling black enamel workmanship in-between, dotted with white polka dots.
Harlequin jewellery, as the name suggests, draws its inspiration from the colourful patchwork costumes of the 16th Century “Commedia dell'arte” characters. The style became popular during the 19th Century and saw wonderful pieces of jewellery abundantly decorated in multi-coloured gemstones, making them both luxurious and playful.
It’s very rare to come across such a spectacular Victorian harlequin pendant of this quality and condition. It dates to the mid 19th Century and has been accompanied faithfully by its original antique box, featuring a cream velvet/ silk interior and a brown leatherette exterior that has preserved it beautifully across the centuries.
