Antique Victorian Mourning Bishop Ring Garnet Diamond Inscribed Abbot Leo 1888
This remarkable antique Victorian mourning bishop ring is crafted in 18ct yellow gold and bestowed with a large, polished cabochon garnet in the centre, surrounded by four glittering old mine cut diamonds, often symbolising deep love and devotion in mourning pieces. It’s further decorated with black niello artistry and rope edging around the gallery, with ornate engraving down its broad shoulders.
On the back, an inscription reads: “From E.H – M.H, in remembrance of July 15, 1888, to Abbot Leo”. Though we can’t be certain of its provenance, this indicates the piece was gifted to and worn by a catholic bishop, possibly even Abbot Leo Haid who was a pioneering American Catholic bishop during the late 19th Century, based in North Carolina. The date likely refers to a significant event or loss, possibly the passing of a previous Abbot, but this is uncertain.
This grand garnet diamond bishop ring is a rare and collectable antique treasure and likely has a rich and fascinating story behind it. It dates to the late 19th Century and has been lovingly preserved over the centuries.
